HR Today's Verbal Warning Letter for NZ Businesses

What is a verbal warning letter?

A verbal warning letter outlines the details discussed during a meeting between the employer and the employee regarding the concerns raised and the expectations for improvement.

Verbal warning letters provide a structured approach to addressing employee conduct or performance issues promptly -- by documenting verbal warnings, businesses can establish a record of progressive discipline, which may be essential for future reference or if further action is necessary.

The letter covers the following areas:

Reason for the verbal warning
Employee's response during the meeting
Potential consequences if performance or conduct does not improve
Scheduling a follow-up meeting to review progress
Offering support resources, such as counselling services
Emphasising the importance of confidentiality
